RAJESH KARKI, Ph.D., P.Eng.

Dr. Rajesh Karki obtained his B.E. degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Engineering College (renamed National Institute of Technology), Durgapur, West Bengal, India in 1991, and MSc and PhD degrees in electrical power engineering in 1997 and 2000 respectively from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He worked for academic institutions and different industries in Nepal between 1991 and 1995. He worked for General Electric Industrial Systems, Peterborough, ON, Canada during 2000-2002.

Dr. Karki joined the University of Saskatchewan, Canada as an Assistant Professor in 2002, where he currently works as an Associate Professor. During 2005-2012, he chaired the Power Systems Research Group at the University of Saskatchewan. He has served in various capacities in conferences, workshops and guest lectures in Canada and abroad and has published over 80 papers in reputable international journals and peer reviewed conferences. His research interests include power system reliability, system planning, renewable energy systems and reliability modeling of engineering systems.

Dr. Karki has completed several consulting projects on system planning and reliability for Canadian electric utilities. He has instructed training courses on power system reliability to electric power utilities and engineering professionals in Canada and abroad. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Professional Engineer in the Province of Saskatchewan, Canada.

Professor Gilsoo Jang

Current Research Interest

Dr. Jang is interested in power quality, power system dynamics and controls, computer applications in power system engineering, integration of renewable energy resources, etc. From 2000, his group has focused its research in the field of power systems and power quality along with more than 40 research projects performed related to these fields and has very a strong collaboration with research institutes and companies, such as KEPRI, KRRI, KPX, KNRF, KETEP, KOSEF, KESRI, MOCIE, NIPA, KEPCO, LSIS, etc. Their cooperation covers various areas, such as power system control, power system simulation algorithms, power quality monitoring, power system protection, renewable energy, and so on.

Biographical Information

Dr. Jang received his BE from Department of Electrical Engineering, Korea University, Korea in 1991, MS degree also from Department of Electrical Engineering, Korea University, Korea, in 1994, and Ph. D from the Electrical Engineering, Iowa State University, USA, in 1997. He was a visiting scientist at Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Iowa State University, USA, from 1997 to 1998, a senior researcher at Power Systems Lab., Korea Electric Power Research Institute, Korea, from 1998 to 2000, and a visiting associate professor Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Cornell University, USA, from 2006 to 2007.

Dr. Jang has been a professor at the School of Electrical Engineering, Korea University since 2000, and served two years as an Associate Dean for College of Engineering, Korea University from 2011 to 2013.

He has actively participated in academic societies as a journal editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, technical reviewers for international journals and conferences, conference organizer, and so on. He is a senior member of IEEE, a senior member of KIEE, and a member of KSEE (Korean Society for Engineering Education). He has been awarded the KIEE Award in 2006 and 2007, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering from 2006 to 2008, and Yeonam Foundation Fellowship in 2006. He published more than 50 SCI and SCI/E level international journals, and holds 7 domestic and international patents, and has written a book “HVDC Transmission: Power Conversion Applications in Power Systems” in 2009 which is the first IEEE authorized book in the field of electrical engineering from Korea.
